One Piece Super Kabuki to Return as Cinema Kabuki Fall 2016
On April 26, the One Piece Super Kabuki gave their final performance in Fukuoka. During the curtain call, Ennosuke Ichikawa, who played the roles of Luffy, Hancock, and Shanks in the kabuki performance, announced that One Piece Super Kabuki will return this fall as a cinema kabuki and will hit theaters across Japan.
The One Piece Super Kabuki began their performance in October 2015 in Tokyo, and continued to further their success with shows in Osaka and Fukuoka in 2016. According to the official One Piece website, the upcoming cinema version will condense these original shows down to two hours while still retaining all of their charms, and will take full advantage of the cinematic medium to deliver an experience that everyone will be sure to enjoy. Further details will be announced on the official Super Kabuki II One Piece website.
Ichikawa also announced that their live performances will return next year in 2017. So if you missed your chance to see the live kabuki shows this time, you’re not out of luck just yet! No further details have been revealed at this time, but if their next show is anything like what they’ve performed thus far, try to grab an aisle seat… Not necessarily next to the Hanamichi (a platform that connects the stage to the back of the theater) — although by all means go for it if you have the money — just any aisle seat (wink wink).
Also of note is that Fukuoka, where the One Piece Super Kabuki performed throughout this month, is located on the island of Kyushu. Also on this island is Kumamoto, which was hit by a series of powerful earthquakes earlier this month. From April 16 onward, the cast of the One Piece Super Kabuki began collecting donations from the audience for relief efforts for Kumamoto. By their final performance on April 26, they have collected roughly 23 million yen (over $200,000) for the cause.
